No Microwave…
I killed our microwave today. I was melting cheese sauce (thanks for leaving it at camp Wes!) and it just stopped working. It counts down and lights up but it doesn’t make that cool microwave sound that lets you know its working. Oh well. I was able to finish heating up the sauce the old fashion way on the stove. Thinking about it, I don’t think I would enjoy not having a microwave, too much work.
The Folded Flag
This poem says it pretty clearly…
The Folded Flag…
His Mother held the folded flag,
It was a somber day.
A mosaic of tears and memories,
As she heard the bugler play
The last song for a soldier,
As she held his folded flag
And memories of the letter
He wrote her from Ft. Bragg.
He wrote, “Please Mom, don’t worry.
I have to see this through
Make your world a safer place.
It’s something I just had to do!
It’s not just Nine-Eleven Mom,
That stirred my warrior soul,
Not screaming words of Jihad,
A hero’s words, “Let’s Roll!”
Scenes of Dark September, Mom,
As people fell like snow.
For me, it was the tattered flag
Raised high…at Ground Zero.
Remember how I waved her Mom
When I was only ten?
I waved and waved her on The Fourth,
And Veterans Day…waved her again!
It was the words that grandpa said,
“She stands for all that’s true.
Her red is for the blood men shed.
Son, that’s what soldiers do!
Guard her well and wave her high.
Let no one treat her bad.
Honor the men who died for her,
They gave her all they had.
A gift of home and family,
Golden memories as they grew old.
A fine young grandson…like I have.
Son, Freedom’s bought….not sold!”
So Mom, If I should pay the price
To keep her waving high,
And you receive the folded flag-
Mom, be proud of me…..don’t cry!
Place my flag on grandpa’s shelf
With his medals from World War II
And the folded flag…..he got last year
That grandma gave to you.”
His Mother held the folded flag.
It was a somber day.
She placed it high on “grandpa’s shelf”,
Then bowed her head to pray.Marsha Burks Megehee

Glacier’s Edge Council #620
I just got word that the consolidated Four Lakes and Sinnissippi council will now be known as Glacier’s Edge Council #620. While Glacier’s Edge was one of the better names I still don’t like it. I keep trying to picture different patch ideas with no success except for a big white rock.
It will be interesting to see how this new council unfolds. Currently I’m not liking the massive amount of politics. I kept hearing this merger will be good for the kids, but I fail to see how good volunteers quiting is good for the program. I fail to see how blocking a great Assistant Scout Executive, who has proven himself by increasing membership and our friends of scouting campaign, from becoming the new Scout Executive is good for the boys. I guess time will tell.
As of right now I am thinking the best spot for me is to lay low for a while. While I can play the political game, it frustrats me and life is to short to spend time upset about stupid stuff. I do hope that the Lodge consolidation is youth run as I am a bit more pasionate about that. I’d hate to see the time and effort of past youth (yes, including myself) thrown to the wayside so some adults look good and keep their jobs. That is something I would stand up and fight against.
